Halfway there! - Izzy Jennings
Coming into week two, I thought there was no way it could top week one, and I was absolutely wrong. Connections became deeper, the island turned from foreign to familiar, and memories keep piling on. Being halfway through has made me wonder how I only met these people who feel like family two weeks ago.
Throughout class this week, we had the opportunity to learn about Quid Monitor in order to obtain research for our campaigns. Our second part of class mainly focused on getting primary research, beginning by drafting questions, revising, and focusing on special topics within Sint Maarten. On Thursday we were able to actually go out to different parts of the island and talk to people about our research topics. Our group's category is restaurants, so I was able to ask tourists all about the atmosphere, location, and pricing of their favorite places to eat on the island.
A very typical day after classes this week included hanging out at the beach or by the pool with the most amazing people. In the later hours of the day we would often go to dinner and all just hang out until we lost track of time. This trip is so special because you can meet people in such a short period of time and feel like you have been best friends for years purely based on the quality time we spend here.
On Tuesday's excursion we were able to go to both Marigot and Phillipsburg to do some shopping! Marigot: I loved looking at the tents set up towards the bay and even bought a dress from one of the vendors. In Phillipsburg we got to see a true cruise crowd and how much it affects the island in comparison to slower days. The two cities definitely had very different atmospheres, as Marigot was much more relaxed and Phillipsburg was chaos, to say the least.
Friday was one of the most memorable days of this trip as we went to St. Barts for the day. Even though the ferry ride was very rocky, it was still filled with the most beautiful views. Immediately when getting off the ferry, you could see the luxury stores lining the streets. We immediately stopped for breakfast, and the atmosphere as a whole made the meal. St. Barths is such a special town, as it was very relaxed and so clean. You could definitely tell this was more of a luxury island based on the types of stores along with their pricing for food and shopping. Wandering the streets of a new city with your newfound best friends is such a core memory I hope I never forget.
During our free time this weekend a group of us chose to go do an additional adventure at Balaou. Having the freedom to experience off-the-agenda activities during the weekend is such a great time and always makes for some good memories. On Sunday we all took a more relaxed approach with a late wake-up and very relaxing beach day.
I am so sad we are already halfway done with this trip but can't believe I have two more weeks on this beautiful island with the most wonderful people. The word 'grateful' doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about this opportunity and these people. I can't wait to double the fun!!
