Rosie's, Simpson Bay, and St. Barth - Ashley Cooner

After our second week here, it’s safe to say that I have fallen in love with the island, the experiences I’ve had, and the people here that make it special.

Mullet Bay has become one of my favorite places on earth. Not only because of the beach itself, but a hangout and snack spot on the beach called Rosie’s. This place has become one of my friends’ and my favorite spot to go during a typical beach day to chill, get out of the sun, and grab a hot dog. We go there so often that we have made friends with some of the staff there and now they know us by name. It’s also just a great spot to make memories and laugh with friends because the environment is typically very lively.

This week we went out into different parts of the island and interviewed locals for our primary research assignment. I was designated to go to Simpson Bay which, unexpectantly, was a great place to get the opinions of locals well versed in all aspects of what the island has to offer. First, I spoke to a customer outside of Leana’s Coffee Shack who gave great insight into a little-known beach on the French side of the island. Then, I spoke to the owner of Leana’s, and she was telling me about her favorite beach spots that she goes to with her family. Lastly, I spoke to the owner of an outdoor fitness and biking store who shared that Mullet Bay is also her favorite beach because of the turtles that nest along the coastline near the caves, which I had no idea about. Also, while we were in Simpson Bay, my group and I stopped by the McDonalds on the island to put it to the test against our American McDonalds. I can say confidently that the Simpson Bay McDonalds is just as good as the American classic.

My favorite experience I’ve had this week, however, was our day trip to St. Barth. The ferry ride there from Marigot was quite rough both there and back, but the stepping foot onto the island made the ferry ride that much worth it. The Port of Gustavia must be one of the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing places I’ve ever seen. The main street is filled with luxury stores and small eateries that could have been the cover of a postcard. We ate brunch at Arawak where I got the best avocado and salmon toast I’ve ever had, and then later we ate at Le Bar De L’Oubli which had the best Mahi burger I’ve tried since being in the Caribbean. I had the best time just walking around and taking in the environment, as well as a little bit of shopping. I would go back to St. Barth in a heartbeat.

But honestly, once again, it’s the little moments with friends that make each excursion and each experience one to remember. I couldn’t have asked to be friends with any greater of people, and I’m so excited for what these next two weeks have in store!
